22 September 1975: The shadow cabinet policy maker and former housing minister calls for controls to be phased out so private landlords can flourish Sir Keith Joseph , the Shadow Cabinet policy maker and former Housing Minister, said at the weekend that homelessness would not be cured until rent controls were phased out and a taxation system introduced which allowed private landlords to flourish. Public sector housing should be confined to providing for the elderly and the disabled, and to personal subsidies for those who could not afford market rents. He added that many Labour politicians were now thinking this way “but they dare not say it publicly.” Continue reading...
